Multi-room A/V

What is Multi-Room Audio/Video?
Doing dishes with Bach, reading with Vivaldi, or grabbing something from the living room without missing a pitch - this is multi-room audio/video. Whatever you're doing around the house, multi-room audio is a great way to enjoy home entertainment wherever you please.

You don't sit in one room all the time and neither do your guests. Don't worry, it is a relatively simple matter to add a remote sensor in another room to give you the same control over the stereo that you have if you were in the same room with it.
What to think about before installing a system
First off, decide which rooms you want access in. For instance, which rooms you are in the most and where do you want the most equipment. Next, the big decision is speakers- where, how many, what kind? This is Myer-Emco's specialty. We'll walk through your space and help determine what set-up best suits your needs.

And now to begin.
Speakers for multi-room use come in a variety of styles and sizes. They can be built into the walls, set on the floor, mounted on stands, or even suspended from walls or ceilings using specialized mounting hardware.

If you already have a stereo receiver and a pair of speakers, you can enter the world of multi-room audio as simply as adding another pair of speakers in a second room. This can be accomplished by running the wires into the designated room (each speaker requires 2 conductors, one for positive and one for negative) and hooking them to both your speakers and your receiver. Myer-Emco will ensure your speakers are compatible if they only have one set of connections.

Now that you have 2 pairs of speakers hooked up you may suddenly have a desire to make one pair louder than the other at different times. Your receiver won't allow that without help. This comes in the form of volume controls that are wired between your receiver's outputs and the speaker's input terminals. They serve to attenuate the sound to their speaker only, effectively letting the others play louder. When these volume controls are placed in the room where the speakers are located, they also make a convenient switch to shut them off.

This, the Fireball DVDM-100, is one of any home theater control available for your home.
Sound travels
You don't sit in one room all the time and neither do your guests. If you like the idea of even more speakers throughout your house (and who doesn't?), you will need to add another piece of equipment to facilitate further expansion. This piece is called a speaker selector/impedance matcher. That is a long name for a device that allows your amplifier to play up to six pairs of speakers safely, and turn them on or off in any combination from the system location.

Remotely different
As your system grows, you will probably start to miss certain features that you grew used to when you and the system were in the same room! Remote control of radio stations, songs or other features may be among them. Don't worry, it is a relatively simple matter to add a remote sensor in another room to give you the same control over the stereo that you have if you were in the same room with it. For even more control a keypad can be added giving you more choices and eliminating the need to carry around (and possibly lose) a remote control.

Zoning is the goal
The next step would be to add the ability to listen to more than one thing at a time. Wouldn't it be nice to hear your CD play in one room while someone else in the house can listen to a completely different source, such as an FM tuner. This is called zoning and forms the basis for more sophisticated whole house systems. At this level of functionality, it's important to design the system carefully prior to installation. Always plan to wire for more options than you will use in the initial phase of the system's use.
