Flat Panel TV
Looking to replace that outdated family portrait over the mantel! How about hanging an actual masterpiece in the form of a Flat Panel television. Flat Panel TVs represent the centerpiece of your home theater system. No longer are you limited by how large your entertainment center is. The only limitation is how much wall space you have and when considering flat panel TVs, bigger is definitely better.

Because a plasma panel is illuminated at the sub-pixel level, plasma images can be incredibly accurate and precise.
Flat Screen, Flat Panel? Help!
Ok, there is a difference. Flat Screen describes televisions where the screen is a level plane. The term is used to describe tube TVs, or televisions that still use the standard cathode ray tube as a means of projection. Flat Panel TVs also have flat screens, but are much cooler. These models are based on LCD or plasma technology, and are re-defining the word "television." With depths as thin as 3.5 inches and screens up to 60 inches across, you can see how much space they'll save (not to mention impressing all your friends).

LCD vs. Plasma
Now that you understand the difference between flat screen and flat panel, let's discuss the differences between LCD and plasma.

LCD TV, or liquid crystal displays are sometimes referred to as a "transmissive" display - which means light isn't created by the liquid crystals themselves, but by a light source (bulb) behind the panel that shines light through the display. Because of the way an LCD panel forms an image, you never have to worry about image burn-in (a phenomenon that occurs when an image is left on the screen too long). LCD TVs are extremely energy-efficient, typically consuming 60% less power than comparably sized tube-type direct-view TVs!

A plasma TV is sometimes called an "emissive" display, or the panel is self-lighting. Plasma TVs are made up of tiny gas filled pockets called cells. How it works is when electricity passes through the cells they light up. When you get enough of these cells together, they create a picture, hence plasma TV.

Because a plasma panel is illuminated at the sub-pixel level, plasma images can be incredibly accurate and precise. Plasma TVs also provide very wide horizontal and vertical viewing angles, especially when you compare them to conventional rear-projection TVs. Another good thing, is that the picture quality looks sharp and bright from virtually anywhere in the room. Because plasma TV screens do have a phosphor coating, the potential for image burn-in exists, so it's important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations on day-to-day use.

A few basic things to know about flat panel TVs
With flat panel TV's, anything is possible. You can have one hanging on a kitchen wall, in the bathroom, even (although we wouldn't recommend this) on the floor - Flat panel makes it feasible and Myer-Emco makes it possible. But before you come into our store, there are a few things to know.
  • Contrast: You want at least 300:1.
  • Resolution: Flat panels run best at their native resolution. Make sure the panel's resolution is acceptable to you. If it's not, try other TV's to find the picture that works best for you.
  • Angle view: A flat panel's picture will deteriorate slightly when viewed from an angle. Look at the monitor in the store from your preferred angle.
HDTV
Most people think that since they're purchasing a state of the art flat panel TV, that it is automatically HDTV ready. This is not necessarily true. Top of the line flat panels are HDTV ready, but most others require some form of receiver.

Once you've picked your TV (or in many cases, TV's) we'll custom design a home theater based on what you want and the space you have.
