Car Audio
| The ideal car audio system is the one that best meets your needs, so the first step is to figure our what those needs are. |
|
To begin…
The ideal car audio system is the one that best meets your needs, so the first step is to figure out what those needs are. At the rate at which technology progresses, in all probability the new car stereo you purchased a few years back may not be capable of delivering high-quality sound from many of today's most exciting music formats, not to mention playing DVD movies. Think about which new technologies you'd like to incorporate into your car audio system. Below are some things to consider.
In-dash CD/Receivers
You'll be amazed at how great your car stereo can sound with a good CD player as its source. Today's car CD decks are generally reliable and skip-free. But, sound quality definitely varies from brand to brand and model to model. Digital sound can be harsh and unnatural sounding - a quality that is exaggerated by the number of hard, reflective surfaces in most auto interiors. Look for a smooth, detailed presentation of sound. Some great upgrade features to look for are:
- High-power output to take full advantage of your speakers
- Pre-amp outputs so you can upgrade to a separate amplifier and/or subwoofer in the future
Amplifiers
A separate amplifier is the best way to drive the speakers in your car. A good power amplifier is designed to produce more power and cleaner sound than the tiny amplifier that is included in most in-dash CD players and cassette decks. Many amplifiers now include built-in crossovers. While a 2-channel amp will often drive all the speakers in your car, a multi-channel amp gives you more flexibility for independent control of all your speakers and your subwoofer. As a word to the wise, be careful adding several high power amplifiers to your car; you may need to upgrade your car's electrical system with upgraded capacitors, battery and alternator.
CD Changers
It can be nuisance (or even dangerous) to change CDs on the fly, so for the best in digital convenience, a multi-disk CD changer is a smart way to go. Today's changers are smaller and faster than ever before, so they'll mount just about anywhere from your trunk to your glove box, and are then controlled by a tape or CD deck in your dash. Choose from 6-, 8-, 10-, or even 12-disk systems, depending on your tastes.
Speakers
There are two primary categories of full-frequency speakers: coaxial (or triaxial) and separate component speakers.
- Coaxial/Three-way
In a coaxial speaker, the tweeter and bass drivers are combined in one unit for ease of fit and lower cost. When choosing a coaxial speaker, look for those with high-quality separate tweeters, as opposed to lower-quality "whizzer" cones, which are attached to the bass driver without dedicated signal inputs. Because coaxial woofers and tweeters are coordinated in the same frame, you'll be assured good imaging.
- Separates
Separates, or components, consist of separate woofers and tweeters that have an external crossover. These speakers provide you with more placement options and a better crossover. For the ultimate sound performance, we recommend that you choose separate component speakers, where the tweeter can be mounted in its own location, close to ear-level, for the most accurate soundstage recreation.
Subwoofers
One of the most fun things you can do to your car stereo is a subwoofer, a self-contained speaker designed to reproduce the deepest bass frequencies. Subwoofers and bass boxes come in a confusing array of shapes and sizes, so ask your MyerEmco AudioVideo sales associate what will work best for your musical tastes and your particular car. One thing to keep in mind: A sealed box will usually be accurate and tight, but typically won't play as loud as a ported enclosure. A ported box plays loud, but can seem boomy with certain types of music, particularly jazz and classical. In sum, subwoofers demand more power to play at acceptable levels without distortion.

Mobile Video
With kids in tow on long car trips, the questions "Are we there yet?" and "How much longer?" are bound to come up more than once while you're en route. But, with the latest mobile entertainment options installed in your vehicle, backseat passengers will likely forget all about these questions. As your passengers are preoccupied with watching a movie or playing a video game, you'll be free to focus on the open road - arriving at your destination before you know it.
The most important thing to remember with mobile video systems is that they have been designed for the road, not the living room. And, since most mobile video components are not really meant for "do-it-yourself" projects, we advise you to consult with one of our mobile electronics specialists to learn about all of the products and accessories that go into having a complete system. They'll also be happy to discuss installation options with you. Leave it to our experts to help you choose the mobile video system that is right for you and your vehicle.
| The most important thing to remember with mobile video systems is that they have been designed for the road, not the living room. |
|
The easiest way to envision a mobile video system is to break it into the following components:
- Source: a DVD player, VCR, video cassette player (VCP), TV tuner, video game and anything else that provides an audio/video signal for your system
- Video: a built-in monitor, portable TV, laptop computer and anything that allows you to watch video information; screen sizes vary and so do your mounting options
- Audio: an in-dash receiver, amplifier/speaker system, surround processor, headphone system, or a TV monitor with a built-in speaker - anything that will allow you to hear the sound track
Similar to putting together a car stereo system, how much you spend on a mobile video system depends largely on the features you want, your existing audio system, the configuration that best fits in your car, and, of course, your budget. MyerEmco AudioVideo can help you find one that will best meet your needs.
Navigation Systems
Without a doubt, car navigation systems (also called Global Positioning Systems (GPS)) have become an invaluable technology for today's cars. In fact, the trend of many auto manufacturers is towards including GPS as standard equipment on new models. In short, car navigation systems help you to get where you're going and ensure the safety of you and your passengers by keeping you on the right track.
Most car GPS units offer:
- routing
- mapping
- direction features
- audible prompts to alert you of turns and distance
Types of systems include DVD car navigation, CD ROM car navigation as well as total mobile multimedia stations, which link and control all of your system components (i.e. CD player, TV tuner, DVD, processor, navigation system, etc.).
MyerEmco AudioVideo offers the latest in mobile navigation from the best brands in the business. Stop by to talk to one of our experts about getting one for your car today.
Car Automation
Given the vast amount of high-end electronics that people have installed in their vehicles nowadays, it's no wonder car security systems are becoming more and more of a priority. So how much security does one need? With so many alarm choices available, it's hard to know what to choose.
- Basic Alarm Packages: These typically consist of a control module, and a few sensors that are triggered when the doors are open.
- High-end Alarm Packages: These tend to include features like hood and trunk protection; starter interrupt circuits; glass-break, impact, or motion sensors; remote start modules; and inputs for remote functions, such as trunk releases and window roll-up modules.
Good options to consider:
- Motion sensors - sounds an alarm if someone invades your space; good for protecting cargo areas in vans and trucks
- Glass-break sensors - sounds an alarm when following a window break-in
- Driver's side priority unlock - provides added protection; lets you open your door without unlocking the others
- Remote outputs - expands alarm capabilities; adds features such as remote starter or window controls
If installed properly, a basic alarm package is usually an effective theft deterrent. Consult with a mobile electronics specialist at MyerEmco AudioVideo to learn more about how to best protect your car from theft or break-in.
