Founded by Edward Myer in 1955, MyerEmco AudioVideo began as a ham radio repair shop in an old house in Silver Spring, Maryland. Myer's hobby was "High Fidelity" sound, to use the terminology of the day, and he soon integrated audio equipment into his modest store. Back then, only a few hobbyists and music lovers were interested in reproducing natural high fidelity sound in their homes.
As a result, the first few years were a struggle, and the little store lost money. None of the top high fidelity manufacturers would authorize the store to sell their products, so Myer was forced to purchase the amps, tuners, speakers and other products from local dealers then resell them to his customers. Gradually, as the store's technical reputation spread, more and more high fidelity buffs insisted on purchasing from the little store in Silver Spring.
One by one, the manufacturers began to officially authorize Myer to sell their products. The store continued to grow. At the time, the store was called "Myer's Stereo." A few years later, Myer opened a commercial electronic supply business named "EMCO" (for "Ed Myer Company"). A few years after that, Myer combined the two businesses under the name "MyerEmco." As its reputation grew, MyerEmco moved to a larger store in downtown Washington, DC, then a principal shopping district.
The store prospered, particularly after The Washington Post, in 1961, wrote a feature article commending the store. During the 1960's and early 1970's, consumer interest in high fidelity (and later stereo high fidelity) grew by leaps and bounds. Sales of high fidelity equipment spiraled upward rapidly. Two more stores, in Maryland and Virginia, opened, and MyerEmco was established as Washington's leading purveyor of high quality audio and video products.
In 1978 and almost every year since, MyerEmco AudioVideo has been named "Retailer of the Year" by Audio-Video International magazine (a total of twenty five times!). MyerEmco's motto of the time, "Washington's Leading Stereo/Video Store" was taken from an article rating local shops in Washingtonian magazine. For over 50 years, quality products, top sales associates and service personnel, and uncompromising customer service have been MyerEmco's hallmarks. One of those top sales associates was Ed's son Jon. Jon Myer joined the company in 1985. He started in the warehouse and worked his way up through the company in sales where he quickly made a name for himself by keeping to those family business hallmarks. From 1985 to 1991 Jon learned his father's business. He spent several years at the store level, then became MyerEmco's President and CEO in 1991.
One of Jon's first priorities as President was to evolve the company's original emphasis on a traditional "box" business model (seen at most electronics retailers) to a focus on installed systems. MyerEmco sales associates have always been ready and able to connect stereo systems and setup home theaters at our customers' homes free of charge - a policy that continues to this day! As the complexity of these installed systems evolved, so did MyerEmco's Custom Installation Division. Now, half of the products MyerEmco AudioVideo sells are installed buy a professional technician.
In 1998, a critical piece of the Custom Installation "puzzle" was added, with the acquisition of MyerEmco Security Systems, one of Washington's finest residential and commercial security companies. Currently MyerEmco provides a "total turn-key solution" to Washingtonian homeowner's - from multi-room audio/video systems, dedicated home theaters and security systems, to home telephone, lighting, and networking systems.
At the same time, MyerEmco AudioVideo's retail business flourished, as more and more folks wanted to take advantage of the company's quality products, great consultative advice, and service after the sale.
In 2001 MyerEmco AudioVideo moved several of its operations together relocating its corporate offices to Gaithersburg Maryland. The 25000 sq-ft facility currently serves as the distribution hub for MyerEmco's 10 Washington area retail stores and the Custom Installation division, which efficiently services over 30 technician vehicles out of one central location. The building also houses corporate sales and executive offices bringing everything together under one roof.
In 2005 Jon Myer promoted long time Vice President and 18 year industry veteran Gary Yacoubian to President and Chief Operating Officer. Jon currently maintains his title as CEO and principal owner, leaving management of the day-to-day operations to Gary who was Jon's first recruit in 1988. MyerEmco is an active member of the PARA (Professional Audio/Video Retailers Association) division of CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) and CEDIA (Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association). Jon Myer, our CEO, is a past president of PARA and Gary, our President, is currently Chairman of the PARA Division of CEA and serves on the Executive Board of that organization.
